A Ball valve is a quarter-turn rotary motion valve that uses a ball-shaped disk to stop or start the flow.
It resembles a plug valve in many ways. When a port in the ball is in line, it allows flow whereas when you rotate the valve 90 degrees, solid part of the ball stop the flow.
Most ball valves are of the quick-acting type, which requires a 90° turn of the valve handle to operate the valve.
But in case large size valve which required considerable force to open or close the valve, the gear-operated actuator is used. With this arrangement, a small handwheel is enough to operate a fairly large valve.

Types of Ball Valves:
Although ball valves can be divided into many types based on the functionality, there major two categories are given below:
Floating Ball Valve:
A floating ball valve does not have any anchor for holding the ball. However, there is a stem that is attached to the ball.
Due to this reason the fluid freely moves the ball downwards according to the pressure of the flow. A floating ball valve
is considered a great choice for regulating the flow of the valve.
Trunnion Ball Valve:
Unlike the floating ball valve, trunnion ball valve comes with an anchor on both sides of the ball. This additional support
provides pivot to the ball and helps contain the huge flow. Due to this reason, trunnion ball valves are very popular for the
applications, which involve the flow of high-pressure valves.
